What is a blog?
The term blog comes from web-log. A blog is list of posts maintained by an individual or group. The content while mainly text can include, video or other media. These posts are displayed in reverse chronological order. There are hundreds of millions of actively maintained blogs on the internet.
How do I use a blog?
There are many blogging services available like blogspot which offer free blog space where users can create blogs. There are two halves to the process (The front and back end). The front-end is where the reader reads the posts and the back-end is used to create, preview, edit and submit posts.
Some blogs use RSS feeds to help users keep up to date with the latest posts and others allow for readers to make comments on the posts as well.
Why would I want a blog?
The content and purpose of blogs can vary widely from personal online dairies on one end to the latest corporate news on the other.
A blog can be a great PR tool and if there are enough people following the blog it can be really useful for stoking enthusiasm for upcoming product releases etc. Also enabling users to comment on the posted articles can generate valuable insight into the requirements of your customers and clients.
Also just having something on your site posted on another popular blog can provide massive boosts in website traffic. This is often referred to as the 'slash dot' effect after the famous blog site of the same name. Some smaller websites would collapse under the heavy traffic that followed from being posted on such a prominent blog.
