What is Search Engine Optimization and Marketing?
Search engines like yahoo and google use robots called spiders to crawl through blogs, forums, wikis and all the other millions of publicly available data on the web.
SEO is the process of repeatedly and systematically evaluating your web content to make sure it is taking every opportunity to provide the maximum amount of relevant information to the spiders when they crawl your site.
SEM or Search Engine Marketing includes aspects of SEO, but goes further to include more pro-active techniques aimed at getting your site higher in the search engine results.

SEO techniques range from making sure that all content that is supposed to be available on the web is correctly registered with the relevant search engines, to going through your PDF files and making sure that the title and description fields are correctly assigned. SEO also includes guidelines for content types, formatting and styles which can help to improve your crawlability and ultimately your ranking.
SEM or Search Engine Marketing includes some SEO practices, but goes further to include more pro-active techniques centered around advertising your site through search engines. Some of the largest SEM vendors are Yahoo! Search Marketing, Google AdWords and Microsoft adCenter
Why is it important?
Depending on the purpose of your website the level of SEO importance varies. If your website is providing services to existing clients and you are not really interested in using your website as a tool for gaining extra clients then SEO is really of little value.
If it is important that your website be found by internet users who are searching for particular things that are relevant to services/information/products you provide, then SEO is important to give the search engines the ability to take your content and make sure it finds its way into the results of an appropriate search.
SEM is important for companies who want to do more business or who are indeed doing the majority of their business with clients over the internet. SEM is about leveraging advertising tools provided by various vendors to reach out to more potential customers and or using the existing popularity of your site to generate revenue.
