Windows Server 2003/2008


Windows Server 2003/2008 are mostly considered as the starting point and the backbone of any office network.

Features

  • Active Directory for centralizing users and computers management, user authentication
  • File sharing with appropriate permission assignment
  • IIS - Web server for internet and intranet sites
  • Roaming Profile or some refer to as hotdesks allowing for user to move from workstation to workstation and their setting and desktop follows them; this is a great feature when a workstation needs maintenance
  • Shadow copies - quick document restore by users; saving time and no need for the IT Dept. to have to do a restore from backup tapes.
  • Virtual Server - run multiple servers on same physical server, saving hardware cost and space.
  • Terminal Server allows use of thin clients, which allows multiple users runs applications on servers

Windows server comes in a few editions depending on the needs.
  • Windows Small Business Server - up to 75 users
    Windows Server Standard Edition - Terminal server service available
  • Windows Server Enterprise edition - server clustering available
  • Datacenter edition - unlimited virtualization license in Server 2008
